What grit sandpaper for spray paint?

Choosing the right grit sandpaper for spray painting is crucial to achieve a smooth and professional finish. The grit size you use depends on the condition of the surface you’re painting and the type of result you want to achieve.

For surfaces that are already smooth and in good condition, such as previously painted surfaces or metal, using a fine grit sandpaper like 320 grit or higher is recommended. This fine grit will lightly roughen the surface to improve paint adhesion without leaving visible scratches. It’s ideal for ensuring the new paint layer adheres well and provides an even finish.

If you’re working on surfaces with imperfections, old paint, or minor scratches, starting with a medium grit sandpaper in the range of 150 grit to 220 grit is advisable. This grit size helps smooth out uneven areas and prepares the surface effectively for the application of primer or additional paint layers. It ensures a clean, smooth surface that enhances the final paint job’s appearance and durability.

For rough surfaces or areas where you need to remove old paint, rust, or other contaminants, using a coarser grit sandpaper like 100 grit to 120 grit is suitable. This grit size is effective in leveling the surface and removing stubborn imperfections, providing a clean canvas for the new paint. However, always finish with a finer grit sandpaper to ensure the surface is smooth before applying the final coats of paint.
